New Style Test

Based on the animated short, "Snowflake" and the artist Jake Panian's sketches. What do you guys think?

  1. I think we should try to avoid purely black and white, look to grey and the whole variety of color in that.
While I think Lauren showed this style to illustrate it's elegant use of contrast and color, I don't think we should totally diverge from the style we've been working toward so far. We can take the "Gruau-style" line (or lack of it, as he also used) and his unfinishedness, and merge it with the "soft touch" use of color in "Snowflake", as well as Panian's strong contrast.
The black and white with shots of color look has been done before. Try taking the grey up in saturation about 10-20% and choosing colors carefully. This will give it some character without it being just B&W.

  2. We were trying to go for a bluish gray tone. Not Black and white. Perhaps its reading as black and white, so adjustments should be made. I like the overall lack of color. It will make the make up looks that much stronger. I'd like to see some other viz dev people take a stab at a style test.

  3. Yeah, some more passes would help.
I think I read the cool color just as B&W, yeah.... I wonder if it wavered between a cool grey and pure B&W, or cool grey and warm grey, rather than being monochromatic? Maybe that will sell it visually?

  4. I personally still prefer using powder/blush/makeup color.. and this style reminds me of paperman especially with the red lips.. I do think it's a good idea though to keep the background less saturated and the foreground more saturated. I will try different style tests with these ideas in mind..

  5. I think we can do the monochromatic treatment of the background without making it seem too close to Paper Man. Remember we haven't closed in on what color each of her make up changes will be. Also the treatment of the vanity stand needs to be close to or the same as the characters. It's not part of the BG.
