Shot 5 Progress

As you know Shot 5 takes up nearly 50% of the run time of our film.
While the valiant efforts of Alisia, Katherine, and Batia should not be forgotten on shots 4 and 6,

Retimed Credits

Hey guys. Keith and I went over timing, came to this. Lemme know if this feels better. Text will all change, but I think this timing is pretty good.

New credits timing

Hey all. Tried to post this last night but apparently it didn't work. This is the credits with trimmed timing. Look good?

Additional Scan For Debra

Hey all! So Courtney said he wanted me to juice up the face scan, maybe do it twice. I thought just scanning her head twice wouldn't make sense and could be boring for some, but I think this makes sense. In case you can't tell from crappy compression, the second scan is a wireframe of the 3D mesh, like the vanity is loading her profile. Lemme know if ya like!

Font Change

Hey everybody. So Keith and I talked to Chai about the credits and he said to change the font because it didn't feel futuristic. Also, he did not want us to use Lauren's painted titles because there are too many inconsistencies (letters going different directions and what not). He said it works in the title where you only see a few letters, but no so much for a credits situation. He recommended that we choose a font similar to the ones below, and for the titles just do all caps and/or bold. Let me know which ones you guys would like to use!

Credits Test

So here is what I had in mind for the credits:
So that is just the button slightly turning, but I was thinking of using the whole vanity in the shot, so it would look like this:
And with the screen and lights moving it will be more apparent that it's turning. Right now I have the text on a layer in After Effects, but I plan on doing it on a plane in Maya so that it will move perfectly with the button. Also, where the titles are (e.g. - Cast) will be a hand painted text, done by Lauren, that matches the title.

I could also render everything different (maybe solid colors) if we want more of a 2D credit look.

I was thinking to move to the next button would just be a 5 to 8 frame pan.

Lemme know what you guys think!

Credits Font

Hey guys. Here is the font that I THINK we decided on for the credits (Obelisque):
When I typed this out, I noticed that a bit of kerning might be necessary...

So, I'm also posting what I THINK was our close second (Tooney Loons):
Keith or Lauren, maybe you remember what was chosen? I had Obelisque downloaded, but I remember talking about Tooney Loons. Anyway, both are available on DaFont.com.

Lets hear what you guys think and lets make a decision! WOO! ALMOST DONE!

Edit: Ask and ye shall receive! Unfortunately, the font Obelisque does not have a bold version, but here is a faux bold from Photoshop.

Credits Spell Check

Hey All,
Make sure your name is on this list and spelled correctly. This list will be used for the credits.
A final name check will go out next week when the Credit Screens are done. Thank you.

2 Weeks. The Home Stretch.

Okay Crew,
We have 12 days to finish this film. It's time to put all the pieces together.

In these last two weeks, it's important to work together, be in the building at the same time as much as possible, and communicate effectively with one another. Many of you are working on the same shots so it will be very important to keep connected so we can avoid fixing things later.

There will be late nights ahead, but what else is new.

Today I saw Kayla and Amit helping Flavia. Tomorrow Samia said she's helping Melanie with Flash. Eric is helping Samia with color. Aldo is helping everyone.
Kevin is always going around offering help and an eye to the clean up artists.

This is the kind of thing that will get this film not only finished, but will really make it shine.

The last people doing rough animation: Kevin, Lauren, Aldo, and Batia,
should be finished by the Weekend (the 10th), which will mean a huge push for clean up from Saturday to Wednesday.
It'll be very tight. But we need those last few days for editing and compositing and I know Nick will want any completed shots as soon as possible (read: BEFORE Thursday the 15th) to composite into the film.

This is going to be the best Adobe film produced this year, and we are going to make it happen.
Thanks for being the best crew in 118B.
Keep it up!

-Keith

Shot 5 Fight

Hey Guys,
Here are some different options on Debra being exasperated and annoyed with Jess.
I like options 1 and 3 better than 2. I think option 1 is a winner.

Option 1:

Option 2:

Option 3:

More back of vanity's design

More designs based on feedback from Keith and Lauren...

Vanity's New Back Design

These are more vanity's back design I have come up with based on feedback from Keith that it should just be a simple design element that is low in contrast and not distracting. Thoughts?

back of vanity design

I am currently working on designing the back of the vanity, and this is what I have come up with incorporating some ideas from Justin. Thoughts?

Debra's Silhouette

So, these are Debra's silhouettes for scene 1. I did two slightly different poses. The "no hand" ones are for passing position. I'm aware that only the top half would probably be used, but I'm not sure how much is going to be seen through the window. I can cut it if needed. Let me know if this works. Thanks.

I'll put them in the production folder as well for full resolution.

Film Status 4/21

Hey All,
Thanks to everyone who made it to the workday on Saturday.
Besides myself we had 3 people on Clean Up, 2 on Viz Dev, and 2 Animators
hunched over churning this film out.
It was a huge success. Bunny and Courtney came in and were very happy (whew)
and impressed with our progress and it looked SUPER good to have so much of the BFA lab filled with our crew (90%!).

Working together at the same time really does make a difference.

Moving on to this week, Nick Maksim and I are planning to spend the day compositing and compiling as much as we can into the animatic.

THIS MEANS: We need as much progress as you can give us on your part of the film as you can by Thursday midday, preferably Wednesday night.

PLEASE DON'T WAIT TILL THURSDAY NIGHT TO POST PROGRESS

Compositing and Editing takes time, and in order to avoid the scolding we got on Friday, we need to be able to make what we present shine.

This does not mean you can't continue to work on the film Thursday evening, just that we have enough time to get it in to the animatic.

If we can get shots 1, 2, and 7 completely finished and in the film by this Friday, there's a good chance we can have the whole thing finished by the 2nd of May (IF we work together).

So let's keep going!

Final Jessica Look

Hey Guys,
An update for those who haven't heard, Bunny, Courtney, and Dave all got a chance to look at the different treatment for Jessica when cleaned up and with a little help from everyone (including Amit) we came to the agreement of this

As you can see the top line of the eyes are thicker and then taper to a thinner line, which will make clean up a bit more annoying but nothing that we can't handle. Also the hair, eyebrows, nose, and inside of the mouth are lighter.

The color guide has been updated on the server and here on the blog. Also the color guide here is under tutorial to make it easier to find in the future.

Thanks yall and peace out

Possible Button Highlight Color Change

Hey guys. Just wanted to see what you think about this. Helps the hands read better over selected buttons.

CURRENT VERSION

DARKER BUTTON

Friday, April 18, 2014

Outline Tests

Some quick variations on line treatment.
Upper left is the original, upper right has rounded edges for head and smaller eyes but eyes are same,
middle left has smaller lighter lines, middle right has brush tool for outline
lower left has a darker skin for the no outlined eyes, and lower right is not as noticeable but has texture overlay for lines

If you have other ideas for how to go about it feel free to post and we can all decide on one together, just make sure that its a reasonable method that won't take forever to complete.

Final Hair Changes - timed out

Here are the new hair changes, timed out, and with the selected makeup changes!

Happy animating!

I still have the photoshop file, if the person cleaning up wants to import some of the layers and trace over them for the shapes.  Let me know.

Adobe is Coming!

As most of you know: Adobe is coming to see progress tomorrow.
Let's wow them.

I want to get as much of our hard work into the animatic as possible.
Leave as little room for questions as we can, and really make it shine.

I'll be contacting people personally today to discuss what all can be done.

Our hard deadline is May 1st. The BFA Gallery opens May 2nd, so the film has to be ready to show at the Gallery.

I think this is more than possible. You all have been doing great work.

The backgrounds are nearly done. Clean up is well on it's way. Animation is finishing and looking really great.

Let's do it!

ColorGuide Vectored version!

Hey guys Samia brought up a good suggestion of making a vectored version of the color guide. She suggested it because in her group there was problems with the colors being consistent since jpeg images can get pixelated and the colors would change around the circle, leading to clean-up artists color picking the wrong color. So here is a vectored version of it, for anyone on the coloring stage, open it in Flash and just copy the symbol to your scene file!

ColorGuide (vectored)

Character Color Guide Revision

We revised the character color guide to include the inside of the mouth and the the tongue. Also included are the skin lines (between the fingers and neck shadow).

Course Correction

Hey Crew,
This week is going to be key.
After yesterday's faculty critique on our progress, we need to make a slight course correction
The objective is not to be done by this Friday, but to be done as soon as possible keeping quality in mind.

A big assignment in BFA was due yesterday so more of my attention will on the film this week.
You can expect e-mails from me and more frequent updates on our progress.

I want to get our progress in front of Dave multiple times next week. We'll need his eye to make things
run as smoothly as possible, or else we're in for more frustration next Friday.

Which means:
Get progress to me often. Send me your progress as soon as you have it and I will get feedback on it. This is the end, so the film has to sing!

ANIMATION:
You heard em', we need more life in shots 1- 4 and 6. Keep in mind, now that Purse film is done, we have more access to clean up artists. Get your shots working and give them life, don't worry about getting them cleaned up as you most likely will have help with that.

VIZ DEV:
We have Backgrounds that need painting. So far only 2 of 7 are in progress. I'll be contacting some of you individually to get going on this.

Above all: Be in constant contact with other crew members. Ask for help. Work together and actually work together (physically). Share feedback. We will only finish as a team.

Get excited, this film is going to be great!

-Keith

New car update

Here is the update for the car

Car Suggestions

Thanks Huy for taking this on. I think we can go for one of these two designs, or perhaps both (one for the drive way and one for the road). The Zbrush sculpts don't have as nice of silhouettes as these do. And I think out of the batch, these two look the most domestic, like my mom would drive them. That's what we're going for. I added a few little things to the one on the left. If we could see how these would look in the drive way by tomorrow, that'd be awesome. Use Melanie's latest house painting for the drive way.
Thanks Huy!

Car!!!

Here is some sketches for the car, as well as two speed sculpts in Zbrush to see how the car look.

Character Color Guide Update

The Character Color Guide is now posted on the Server in the Clean Up folder under the FilmProduction Directory.

That is all.

Update! The Final Days!

Hey Crew!
It's about time I posted an overall update for "Hello Debra"!

Overall, we are keeping up a really good pace.
Yes, we are behind schedule, but which Adobe film isn't?

The DEADLINE is April 4th. TWO DAYS! (ha!)

Realistically, I do believe we can begin compositing by April 4th. About half the film's animation is in the clean up stage more than half will be in clean up by Friday.

The Color Script is done! And style guides are being worked on as I type.

Here's what's being done:

Shots in Animation:
        - Shot 3
        - Shot 4
        - Shot 5 (Jessica part 3, Debra All)

Shots in Clean Up:
        - Shot 1
        - Shot 2
        - Shot 5 (Jessica parts 1, 2, 4)
        - Shot 6
        - Shot 7

- Style Guides / Backgrounds
- Car design
- House design

Here's what still needs to be done:

- Final exact decisions for Deb's hair and Make up choices based on choices we narrowed down.
- Finished clean up on all shots
- Coloring in of all shots.
- Backgrounds
- Final pass of sound
- Compositing
- Final Edit

We are nearing the end! And let me tell you, from talking to the other groups, this crew is in THE best shape. We might even finish first! You guys are putting forth the effort.
I greatly appreciate your continued enthusiasm.
I'm really proud of all the work that's being put into this film, let's make it shine!

-Keith

Shot3 anderson

Hey guys. here is some progress for my shot. I still have a lot to fix. Im attempting to put in the mouth shapes for the dialogue but they still dont seem to be translating that well. Also I am going to add some extra buisness to that super long hold when she is in the air and change the pose due to a crit from annabel.

Character Color Guide

We have decided on the final colors for our characters. Note that the skin tone is off-white and the facial features are off-black. Debra's hair is also off-black.

final color script

Finally! The final color script is here! Me, Flavia, Lauren, and Keith have collaborated on this the past three days. Flavia and I would be working on style guides for the backgrounds based on this color script, and we would be painting backgrounds very soon! Flavia will be posting the character color guide momentarily.

I did another pass on the house based on Dan's design.

Shot 7 With Sound And UI Color

This should be pretty much ready to drop the cleaned animation into and call it done. Enjoy!

Shot 4 Yay!

So Keith instructed me to move the shot to the left, in case anybody wonders. But Here's basically what the UI will look like. Just need the actual eye design/icon design.

Anderson_Shot 3

So Here is some of my progress of the end on my shot. Let me know what you think. I will be tackling the rest of the inbetweens later and Also fleshing out the facial expressions and mouth dialogue.

House Designs So Far

All the house designs we have so far so we can compare what elements we like and dislike.

VisDev Progress

This is my version and interpretation on what I think the faculties responding well to both Lauren's and Flavia's color scripts. I kept the transition from more of a desaturated color palette in the beginning to a more saturated pink at the end. I make Jessica's clothes brighter at the end assuming the vanity would shine on it making it brighter. I was playing with giving an effect of light from the vanity to the background and character, but it doesn't work as well on the character as it does on the background because whatever color the vanity is emitting will be darker than white which is the color of their skin. I was talking to Flavia yesterday, and we agree that a good way to show an effect of light is to give them shadows, and we can change the color of the shadow if necessary.

I also started on exploration for the car. I can clean them up today so it looks more clear and presentable. Any thoughts on these would be appreciated.

Color Script New Pass

Great Color Script Reference

What I like about this particular color script is how well it is explained of the choices they made and what they're trying to achieve with this color choices.

Also, I have requested for Courtney to post an animation called "Un Tour de Manege" that he showed for the school group this past Monday on our week10 folder because I think it is a good example of how color transition can work and how it can strengthen the changes in mood within the story moments.

Update:
Courtney's comment regarding "Un Tour de Manege"

The film introduces the necessity to match technique and color to story... not just random choices for a random story... so make your adjustments as the story demands.

That film also addresses the creativity and story telling of drama, love, adventure, other universes, and the comfort of family... definitely something to consider...

Shot 7 Rough

So it's not completely finished, but this is the gist I was thinking of. Please comment!

Jessica's Hair Changes v1

My thoughts on how quick the hair can change, and which designs (in order) it will change to.  I had more of the hair designs we chose, but with the audio there wasn't much room to shove them all in there.

Shot 2 Almost Done!

I also posted this in week 10 on the server. Lemme know if yall think the timing on the last couple button hits works, or any other crits. I think I should be able to bust out the UI for Aldo's shot on Sat. Thanks!

Shot 3-Debra

I still need to work on where the dialogue is, but I feel better about the timing and stuff now.

Any feedback or suggestions would be fantastic.
Hi All, Been Tie-ing down my inbetweens and can spend forever on finessing and cushioning in settles but, here's what I got.
Thoughts?

Shot3_Anderson

Here is some progress on my shot. I lowered it, put deb in and put the audio on. Also starting rough in-betweens. Let me know what you think of the timing with dialogue and everything else.

Hi guys,
I meet up with Keith and Flavia recently, and we picked the candidates for the looks that we're gonna use in the film from all the ideation we did so far.

Saturday, March 15, 2014

Friday, March 14, 2014

All hair and make up ideations we have up to today. Please tell me if I missed some.
