Character Color Guide

We have decided on the final colors for our characters. Note that the skin tone is off-white and the facial features are off-black. Debra's hair is also off-black.

final color script

Finally! The final color script is here! Me, Flavia, Lauren, and Keith have collaborated on this the past three days. Flavia and I would be working on style guides for the backgrounds based on this color script, and we would be painting backgrounds very soon! Flavia will be posting the character color guide momentarily.

I did another pass on the house based on Dan's design.

Shot 7 With Sound And UI Color

This should be pretty much ready to drop the cleaned animation into and call it done. Enjoy!

Shot 4 Yay!

So Keith instructed me to move the shot to the left, in case anybody wonders. But Here's basically what the UI will look like. Just need the actual eye design/icon design.

VisDev Progress

This is my version and interpretation on what I think the faculties responding well to both Lauren's and Flavia's color scripts. I kept the transition from more of a desaturated color palette in the beginning to a more saturated pink at the end. I make Jessica's clothes brighter at the end assuming the vanity would shine on it making it brighter. I was playing with giving an effect of light from the vanity to the background and character, but it doesn't work as well on the character as it does on the background because whatever color the vanity is emitting will be darker than white which is the color of their skin. I was talking to Flavia yesterday, and we agree that a good way to show an effect of light is to give them shadows, and we can change the color of the shadow if necessary.

I also started on exploration for the car. I can clean them up today so it looks more clear and presentable. Any thoughts on these would be appreciated.

Great Color Script Reference

What I like about this particular color script is how well it is explained of the choices they made and what they're trying to achieve with this color choices.

Also, I have requested for Courtney to post an animation called "Un Tour de Manege" that he showed for the school group this past Monday on our week10 folder because I think it is a good example of how color transition can work and how it can strengthen the changes in mood within the story moments.

Update:
Courtney's comment regarding "Un Tour de Manege"

The film introduces the necessity to match technique and color to story... not just random choices for a random story... so make your adjustments as the story demands.

That film also addresses the creativity and story telling of drama, love, adventure, other universes, and the comfort of family... definitely something to consider...

Jessica's Hair Changes v1

My thoughts on how quick the hair can change, and which designs (in order) it will change to.  I had more of the hair designs we chose, but with the audio there wasn't much room to shove them all in there.

Shot 2 Almost Done!

I also posted this in week 10 on the server. Lemme know if yall think the timing on the last couple button hits works, or any other crits. I think I should be able to bust out the UI for Aldo's shot on Sat. Thanks!

Flash Clean Up Process / Daichi's Response

Yesterday Aldo sent this Clean Up plan to Daichi at Adobe..

Response sent yesterday

Keith,

I think it's a decent approach and doable.  but a Flash animation tends to be very flat and static.  It is nothing wrong with that if the style fits.  but I think your story can be more alive if you avoid the flatness.  I recommend to paint the background in Photoshop.  Also, if you guys can, make some form-shadow on the characters.  It would take more time, but it would be worth, in my opinion.

Response sent this morning

I'll take it back about the shadow suggestion I made yesterday.  In general, I think it is a good idea, but if your animators are using shape tween to make the animation very dynamic, it might be better not to put the shadow.  so, your choice.

by the way, here you can watch free Flash tutorial videos.

I will see you guys next week.

Bunny and Courtney's response to Color Scripts

Hi Keith,

Please pass on my congratulations to Lauren, Michelle, Melanie, and Flavia. All four artists have done an excellent job, and should put the "Hello Debra" color scripts in their portfolios.

As to what you should go with…

We like the fact that Lauren has created a palette that makes sense and can be easily used my the whole team. And…we like Flavia's creative use of color.

So…we think the best plan would be to have Lauren and Flavia work together to create a color script that blends Falvia's bold color with Lauren's ability to organize a clear palette.

Sound like a plan?

Color Script

color script

Hi guys, I've been reading up on Noble Approach book on how Maurice Noble uses color, and this is what I come up with. He pointed out how important is is to have the character's color figured out first before designing color for the background which will support whatever the character's color is. I would really love to try more color combination, but I'm really not feeling well right now :( Maybe later tonight I'll try a few more if it's not too late.

Color Script

One and a slight variation.
So, here is what I came with. I pretty much stuck with the same color scheme and I tried to explain what I was thinking, in case it didn't come across. lol. I didn't want the colors to shift too much through out the film and I figured most of the changes would happen because of the lighting from the mirror, based off of both Debra and Jessica's style choices. I hope this helps in some way. lol.

If you open the image in a new tab, I think you can read what I wrote.

Style Example and Color Scripts!

Hey hey Viz Dev!

First, a quick reminder about your color scripts. You have room to be creative, the things I want you to keep in mind are clean shapes, bits of texture, and keep it feminine! These are DUE BY 9 PM 2/8 this evening. They don't need to be perfect, we just want to see what you guys come up with.

Second, I found this image that is exactly on par for how I envision the treatment of the film.

The specific qualties I like are as follows

  • Clean and graceful shapes, lots of curves
  • The use of texture (look at her hat) and line work in her hair
  • The change if value to separate body parts and create depth (look at her legs)
  • Feminine!
After we decide on a color script, I'd like you guys to take to paint Debra in this style so we can see how it looks!

More Options for colorscript

Hi guys, here are some last minute options of color script for tomorrow. I darken the dress, brighten the overall color, and trying different color for the buttons. Adding a little bit of red-orange to the palette, but still keeping it very limited..

Ruby Gloom

Hi guys,

Some of you might have watched this before, but I just found this series, Ruby Gloom, on netflix about a week ago and thought it has a similar style we're going for, except our furniture will be in line rather than shape. Might be good to look at..

This particular clip takes place in her pink bedroom.

The opening theme uses silhouettes very well.. Might not be as relevant, but very interesting.

color script test

Hi guys, these are two versions of the revised color script in an animatic form. The timing is far from accurate, this is just to see how they look one after the other. Only the last 3 frames are different on both versions. Let me know which one works better or if they both still need work..

On this second version, the idea is to have Debra turns off the light when she gets out to increase contrast and intensity by making the room dark when Jessica is in power!

Update: I don't understand why the first few frames don't show up :( but these are the complete color scripts.
